Best results for afro hair

Have you ever wondered how to achieve the best results when dealing with Afro Hair? As stylist or client it is sometimes difficult to know how to achieve the best look, style or condition, here are a few tips to help you along the way…

When tonging the hair that will both protect and set the curl, defining it and making it last longer.

Always use a good range of products specifically geared towards your own hair type. A good moisturising prime care product is essential when dealing with Afro Hair; well moisturised hair will prevent breakage and the hair becoming brittle.

If you don't want to blow dry your hair all the time risking damage, use wrapping lotion and comb the hair flat, then go under the dryer. This will result in sleek, straight hair.

A useful fact to keep in mind, is that Afro Caribbean hair is the only hair that varies in diameter, and, because of the degree and intensity of its curl it is the weakest hair in any group- so treat it with respect!

A colour consultation is always a good idea whatever your hair type if you are considering changing the colour of your hair. Always consider the condition of your hair and view the colour chart before making any rash decisions.

After having braids or weaves removed from the hair, always allow the hair to rest first before relaxing the hair straight and putting more stress on it.

Steam treatments are recommended to deal with the dryness of Afro hair, regular treatments at your salon will enhance the condition of your hair, locking in moisture and reducing breakage.

A mild texturiser will tame excessively frizzy hair and leave it with a more uniformed curl, this is much more flattering, leaving your hair looking healthy and well maintained.

Sleek hairstyles can be achieved by wrapping the hair, making sure you use the fine end of a comb to help smooth it down as much as possible. Use a fine net or scarf to keep the hair flat, making sure that it is not too tight leaving the most hideous line across your forehead.

Adequate trimming between straightening treatments is essential, but ensure there is enough re-growth to provide overlapping when a conditioning treatment is applied to reduce the risk of breakage between visits.

Relaxed hair is the weakest and most vulnerable to tangling and breakage when wet, always use a wide toothed comb and never brush the hair when wet this will cause ultimate breakage.

Cutting techniques can vary and will vary between hair types. Afro hair requires the same method of cutting techniques as European hair so don't hold back, be creative.

Washing your hair every 7 to 10 days is adequate, over shampooing will strip the hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and brittle.

Take these steps into consideration when working with Afro hair and you'll be able to achieve beautiful results every time.
